Don’t hide behind audit to abandon Agenda 111 project – Okoe-Boye cautions gov’t

Former Health Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, has called on the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to outline its clear plans for the continuation of the Agenda 111 project.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Okoe-Boye emphasized that while the NDC government’s decision to conduct an audit of the project is not out of place, Ghanaians deserve transparency regarding the next steps.

“The previous NPP government was committed to the Agenda 111 project, but we couldn’t finish before losing the 2024 election. Now, after nine months in government, all the NDC is telling us is that they are auditing the project. That’s fine, but based on our history, sometimes audits become an excuse to delay or abandon projects entirely,” he said.

The former Ledzokuku MP noted that the NDC’s claim that the former government left no funds for the project was misleading.

He acknowledged, however, that completing the initiative would require significant investment.

“They are saying we need about ₵1.9 billion to complete it, which is a lot of money,” he said. “But they can devise a strategy, they don’t need to raise all that at once. They can work in phases, complete 30 facilities or so, and gradually get the rest done.”

He urged the government to prioritise transparency and communication to assure citizens that the much-anticipated project remains a national priority.

The Agenda 111 project, launched under the Akufo-Addo-led government in 2021, aimed to construct district, regional, and specialized hospitals nationwide to improve healthcare delivery and accessibility.

While several sites reached various stages of completion before the 2024 general election, the change in government has since raised questions about the project’s future direction.
