Man accused of causing wife’s death, denied funeral and custody of child

A heart-wrenching family dispute has come to light on Nhyira FM’s Obra Show, where Isaac Painstil accused his late wife’s family of denying him access to his four-year-old daughter and barring him from attending his wife’s funeral.

Narrating his ordeal, Isaac said he had been doing his best to support his wife, who was battling a medical condition, but her family suddenly relocated her without his consent.

“They took my wife away without telling me. For two years, I could only speak with her once in a while just to ask about the child. Anytime I tried to help with medication, she refused to take it. I believe they turned her against me,” he said tearfully.

According to him, his greatest shock came when his mother informed him of his wife’s death. “When I went to her family, they said she had committed suicide because I had abandoned her for two years. But that is not true. I never abandoned my wife,” Isaac lamented.

The family, however, painted a different picture. They accused their in-law of neglect and irresponsibility. One family spokesperson said on the show: “Isaac insulted us several times and refused to apologize. He never performed his duties as a married man. He stopped giving chop money, there was no intimacy, and he hardly followed up on our daughter’s condition. He left her to suffer, and that is why we believe his neglect contributed to her death.”

But they confirmed that their daughter died in their home, and admitted deliberately withholding the child and restricted Isaac from attending her funeral. “We could not allow him at the funeral because he abandoned her for years. He does not deserve to cry over her now,” one family member stated firmly.

The situation became more emotional as Isaac pleaded to be reunited with his daughter, who will soon turn four years. “My only source of hope and comfort is my child. They have taken everything away from me. All I ask is to see and raise my daughter,” he sobbed during the live broadcast.

Host of the Obra Show, Ohemaa Benewaa, who moderated the mediation, urged calm on both sides. “This is a painful situation. A young woman has died, leaving behind a little child who needs love and care. The family is grieving, and the husband is also hurting. What is most important now is finding a lawful and fair way forward,” she said.

After listening to both parties, the adjudicators concluded that Isaac should seek legal counsel before the case continues.

Nhyira FM has since secured a lawyer to assist him. The matter has been adjourned until he returns with legal advice, as the panel noted he remains emotionally distressed and, according to the family, unprepared to properly care for the child.
