Artistes who say they’re not doing music for awards are liars – Ras Kuuku

Reggae-dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has called out musicians who claim they do not care about winning awards, describing such statements as dishonest.

In an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the “Wo” hitmaker said every artiste desires recognition for their work, and awards remain one of the highest forms of validation in the industry.

He likened winning awards to crop harvesting, explaining that music is a seed and awards symbolize germination.

“Any artiste who says they don’t do music for awards is lying. Awards bring joy and make fans proud. It’s a recognition of your hard work. When you win, it means the music you planted has borne fruit. If you don’t, then maybe what you sowed failed to be harvested.”

He opined that awards distinguish artistes from their peers and inspire them to improve their craft.

“Those who say they don’t want awards are the same ones who love comparisons. Awards set you apart. If you’re an artiste, whether legendary or not, and you’ve never won a TGMA, then there’s something wrong,” he said.

Ras Kuuku revealed that many artistes secretly feel disappointed when their efforts go unnoticed, claiming that some artistes he knows even cry in secrecy.

For him, he is proud he has awards to his name, which is his ultimate satisfaction for doing music.

He concluded by urging the music industry to appreciate recognition systems like the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), saying they motivate artistes and strengthen fan loyalty.
