The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kwesi Dawood, has directed the Awutu Senya Municipal NADMO office and the Assembly to demolish all houses built close to the Okrudu River to prevent future disasters.
According to him, a 50-foot radius from the Okrudu River is a designated buffer zone, and no structure should exist within that space.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Dawood expressed concern over the increasing number of buildings along the riverbank, describing the situation as a disaster in waiting.
He made the remarks during the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction celebration in the Awutu Senya East Municipality, themed “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.”
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has appealed to residents of Kasoa to stop dumping refuse into the Okrudu River and nearby drains, warning that such practices contribute to severe flooding during heavy rains.
