Ghana’s failure to qualify for 2025 AFCON ‘heartbreaking’ – President Mahama

President John Mahama has expressed deep disappointment over Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the setback as “heart-wrenching.”

For the first time in over two decades, the Black Stars failed to secure a place in Africa’s premier football tournament.

After six matches in the qualifying campaign, Ghana ended at the bottom of its group with just three points and no victories.

Despite this setback, head coach Otto Addo has led a remarkable turnaround, guiding the Black Stars to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM following the World Cup qualification, President Mahama acknowledged the disappointment but praised the team’s resilience.

“Failing to qualify for the AFCON was a heart-wrenching for all Ghanaians, as it was the first time in many decades,” he said.

“Ghana has always been a permanent fixture at the tournament, so it was quite painful. However, the boys have made up for it by qualifying for the World Cup,” President Mahama added.

Ghana will learn its group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5 in Washington, D.C.
