The Ministry of Transport has outlined plans to enhance safety on the Volta Lake and other water bodies across the country, with the aim of reducing accidents and safeguarding travelers who depend on waterways as their primary means of transportation.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe made this known at the Government Accountability Series held in Accra.
He explained that government, through the Ghana Maritime Authority, has recruited safety officers and is setting up satellite offices to strengthen regulation and security in inland water transport.
According to Mr. Nikpe, the John Mahama administration has prioritized investment in the transport sector since assuming office in January this year.
He stated that the ministry has been working closely with stakeholders to introduce reforms and infrastructure that will ease the transportation challenges faced by Ghanaians.
He emphasized that canoe transport on the Volta Lake and other waterways must be properly regulated to prevent accidents and improve passenger safety.
The Minister also disclosed that government is on course to deliver on its commitment to legalize the operations of okada.
He revealed that extensive stakeholder engagements have already been completed, with plans underway to lay an amended Road Traffic Act before Parliament to provide the legal backing for the initiative.
Mr. Nikpe assured the public that the ministry remains committed to implementing policies that will make the country’s transport system safer and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
