Asanko Gold conflict: Lands Minister commiserates with family of deceased, promises investigations into fatal shooting

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has visited the family of a local Assembly Member who was killed during a violent clash between military personnel and community youth in the Amansie South District.

The visit, which took place on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, formed part of government’s efforts to calm tensions following the September 9 incident at the concession of Asanko Gold Ghana Limited.

Addressing the bereaved family and sympathizers, Mr Buah expressed deep sorrow over the death, describing the Assembly Member as a committed community leader.

“I am deeply sorry for your loss and I share in your pain. I want to assure you that government will ensure proper and thorough investigations into the events that led to this tragedy and that the perpetrators are brought to book. The President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, also conveys his profound condolences,” he said, commiserating in the local Akan dialect.

The confrontation reportedly erupted after local youth, angered by what they described as the company’s neglect of community development, encroached onto the mining concession. Military personnel called in to restore order clashed with the youth, leading to the fatal shooting.

After consoling the family, the Minister held discussions with the management of Asanko Gold, urging the company to strictly comply with mining regulations and make community development central to its operations.

He stressed government’s commitment to bridging the rift between the company and the community to ensure peaceful coexistence.

Mr Buah was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including the Technical Advisor to the Minister, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, the Ministry’s Director of Communications, the Chief Inspector of Mines, and the National Coordinator of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).
