The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Kwaku Deku, has clarified that Ghanaians do not need to present their physical Ghana Card at banking halls once biometric verification has been completed.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Deku explained that a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is sufficient for banking transactions, as the card’s security features allow for authentication without photocopies.

“Verifiable proof of identity does not mean making a photocopy. You need biometric verification to be sure. Until authentication is done, the person’s identity cannot be established,” he noted.

He revealed that the Ghana Card has three profiles: the E-ID, E-passport, and E-wallet. Once the E-ID is activated, citizens will be able to carry a digital version of the card on their phones for use.

Mr Deku added that this was why the Bank of Ghana directed banks not to request photocopies of the Ghana Card.

“The card has three profiles: E-ID, E-passport, and E-wallet. Once we activate the E-ID, you will be able to get a digital copy of your Ghana Card on your phone. This means that when you go to the bank, you won’t need to present your physical card; you’ll only need your PIN. Until the biometric verification is completed, the person’s identity cannot be established. This is why the Bank of Ghana issued a directive to banks that photocopies of the Ghana Card should not be made,” he said.
