The Ministry of Transport has pledged to address the grievances of railway workers who have gone nearly a year without pay.
The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) had threatened to halt operations nationwide and stage a mass protest on September 30, 2025, if the government fails to clear outstanding salaries.
In a notice to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the Union highlighted the severe economic hardship caused by the prolonged delays.
Workers have accused the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) of ignoring repeated appeals for dialogue, despite interventions from the National Labour Commission, Parliament’s Transport Committee, and the Ministry of Labour.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, September 17, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe assured that concrete steps are being taken to resolve the crisis.
“The railway industry has suffered neglect, and President Mahama has shown commitment to revitalise it. We have engaged with the Ministry of Finance to find a more sustainable solution going forward,” he said.
Mr. Nikpe stressed that worker welfare remains a top priority. “We feel for the workers, and we are getting close to getting them their salaries,” he added.
The Minister also announced a campaign, in collaboration with security agencies and the Lands Commission, to remove encroachers from railway lines and secure land titles. He explained that this initiative will allow contractors to advance ongoing railway projects.
