Member of Parliament for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese and Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has accused the former Akufo-Addo administration of complicity in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Kwakye Ofosu alleged that the previous government failed to address the menace and instead allowed its party and government officials to profit from it.

“The previous government completely failed to address it. I have said it and I will repeat it — that government was complicit in galamsey. Their party hierarchy was involved,” he said.

He cited a report authored by former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, as evidence of the involvement of top officials in the trade.

“Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, who they themselves chose to lead the fight, has a report which is damning and shows the involvement of government officials, party officials,” Kwakye Ofosu stressed.

He further claimed that Prof. Frimpong-Boateng had revealed that galamsey served as a major source of financing for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“He has gone on record to have said that galamsey was a major source of finance for the NPP. So it was little wonder that they were not interested in fighting it,” he asserted.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, Ghanaians were justified in voting out the Akufo-Addo administration.

“Ghanaians were right to throw them out in the manner that they did. Ghanaians showed righteous indignation, and it is right that they did so,” he added.
