Villarreal boss backs Partey ahead of Tottenham clash

Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral has expressed confidence in Thomas Partey’s readiness as the Spanish side prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in their UEFA Champions League opener on Tuesday evening.

The Yellow Submarine kick off their Group Stage campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 19:00 GMT, marking Partey’s first return to London since leaving Arsenal earlier this summer.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian midfielder is expected in court later this week for a plea hearing on charges of rape and sexual assault.

Despite the off-field issues, Marcelino insists Partey remains focused and ready for action.

“I am totally convinced that he is mentally prepared and technically prepared to play,” the Villarreal boss said. “For sure, he will be ready. We are very happy Thomas is with us for his football capacity, football ability, and his presence as a human.”

Highlighting Partey’s pedigree, Marcelino added: “He is a great player with a lot of experience. He has played for many top clubs. We know he has a great level. I think he will get back to a top level. I am very happy he is with us in the team.”
