Athletic Club captain Iñaki Williams has pledged that his side will give everything to sustain their UEFA Champions League campaign as they prepare to host Arsenal in their opening Group Stage clash.
The Basque outfit will welcome the Premier League giants to San Mamés on Tuesday, September 16, with kick-off set for 16:45 GMT.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Williams stressed the importance of seizing the moment after years of hard work to return to Europe’s biggest stage.
“For years we have fought to be where we are,” he said. “Tomorrow, we are going to fight to keep the dream alive for as long as possible. We are playing against a great team, one that shows no mercy. We have to make the most of the chances we get.”
Williams also highlighted the need to capitalize on their home advantage and the atmosphere at San Mamés. “At San Mamés, we always have our moment, and the key will be to make the most of it. We will try to stifle them in their own half, break up their play in midfield, and finish off moves quickly, with the support of our fans,” he added.
This season marks Athletic Club’s first appearance in the Champions League since the 2014/15 campaign, and Williams insists the team is determined to make it count.
