A violent clash in Okorase, near Adeiso in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region, has left the town’s Zongo Chief, Sariki Aminu, and two others with gunshot wounds.
The incident is believed to be linked to a simmering land dispute involving armed men suspected to be land guards or national security operatives.
According to the Amankrado of the town, Nana Kwadwo Arhin III, the confrontation occurred around 3 p.m. on Friday, shortly after Muslims had finished prayers.
Armed men reportedly stormed the community in search of the Zongo Chief, claiming he was wanted at the police headquarters in Accra.
When the chief demanded to see their identification, which they allegedly failed to produce, he was shot in the shoulder. Two others who rushed to his aid were also shot.
The incident was reported to the Adeiso police, but residents say that hours later, another group of armed men, believed to be national security personnel, descended on the town and arrested about 15 people without explanation.
Local chiefs and assembly members have since appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and President Nana Akufo-Addo to urgently intervene to restore peace and protect residents.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high in the community. Fearful residents say they feel unsafe, with some abandoning their homes amid uncertainty about what might happen next.
