A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has criticised the government over what he described as the growing trend of targeting opposition members with arrests and harsh bail conditions.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Nana Akomea said the actions of the government are “a disgrace to democracy.”
“How they are going about it is not good. It’s disgusting, and we have to speak against it. Even if someone has committed a crime, that is not the problem. The issue is the way you handle it as if we don’t have laws,” he said.
He accused the government of using state institutions to harass members of the NPP.
“Ever since this government came to power, they have been targeting our party people and causing unnecessary drama. What we have is democracy and peace, but the actions of this government are becoming too much and a disgrace to democracy,” he stressed.
Nana Akomea added that it was wrong for government officials to justify their actions by pointing to similar incidents under past administrations.
“I won’t equalise whether the NPP did the same when we were in government or not. The point is, this is very bad and should not be entertained. If you have evidence, take the person to court and provide your evidence. That’s how democracy works,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the bail conditions often imposed on accused persons, calling for a review.
“The bail conditions in this country must be looked at again. They are not good, and the regulations must be clearly defined so that they don’t become a tool for abuse,” he argued.
Citing an example, he recalled the arrest of NPP stalwart Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, where “the bail condition was very huge and unfair.”
His comments come after the Accra Circuit Court remanded the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, into prison custody on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace and publication of false news.
The complainant in the case is the Ghana Police Service. Abronye is expected to reappear in court on September 19, 2025.
