Abronye reportedly on hunger strike amidst detention

Kwame Baffoe

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has begun a hunger strike while in police custody.

His lawyer, Enoch Afoakwa, revealed this after Abronye was remanded again by an Accra Circuit Court on Friday.

Mr. Afoakwa said his client’s decision is a form of protest against what he describes as political persecution and an unjust arrest.

“Abronye is a man full of life. He knows that this is just mere political persecution, and certainly he is hopeful that his liberty will be restored,” he stated.

The lawyer added that the hunger strike also serves as a safety measure.

“Once you are being handled this way, will you trust that the same people handling you in a manner as if you have committed a treasonable offence, when they give you water, will you take it? When they give you food, will you take it? Certainly, he needs to protect his life and under the circumstances, that is the reason he is on hunger strike,” he explained.

Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025, and charged with offensive conduct “conducive to the breach of public peace.”

The court has ordered that he remain in custody for a week to allow police to conclude their investigations. He is expected to reappear in court on September 19, 2025.
