Mali coach Saintfiet eyes future role with Black Stars

Black Stars celebrate Djiku's goal against Mali

Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has hinted at the possibility of managing Ghana’s Black Stars in the future, once his current tenure with the Eagles concludes.

Saintfiet, who previously led The Gambia, was among the candidates linked to the Black Stars job following Chris Hughton’s dismissal after Ghana’s disappointing run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast. However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) opted to reappoint Otto Addo as Hughton’s successor.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Fire for Fire, the Belgian coach emphasized that his current priority is Mali but did not rule out a move to Ghana when the timing is right.

“Otto Addo has a contract until 2027. My contract ends in August 2026. It could be the next one,” he said.

“It doesn’t mean tomorrow; it could be next year or in two years. The moment I’m available and my contract with Mali has ended, then I’m interested. For now, my focus is on Mali,” Saintfiet added.

While reaffirming his commitment to Mali’s ongoing projects, the experienced tactician left the door open for a potential future role with the Black Stars.
