Bra Eluwa: The sacred tree that walks with the people of Axim

In the coastal town of Axim, in Ghana’s Western Region, stands a tree unlike any other—a mystical being known as Bra Eluwa, meaning “come walk with us” in the Nzema language.

According to legend, centuries ago when raging waters swallowed the old settlement, this sacred tree did not abandon her people. Instead, she moved with them to safer ground and took root once more in their new home.

Since then, Bra Eluwa has been revered not just as a tree but as a guardian spirit, a deity, and a constant companion of the Axim people.

Locals believe her branches carry divine power, and those who whisper their wishes beneath her shade often find them mysteriously fulfilled.

Generations later, Bra Eluwa still stands tall—a living symbol of protection, faith, and timeless tradition in Axim.
