Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong has urged President John Mahama to curb alleged intimidation by state security agencies, warning that such actions could undermine Ghana’s democratic foundations.
In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Agyepong expressed surprise that reported infractions by security agencies have persisted in recent months despite widespread public criticism.
“You have full custody of intelligence services and prosecutorial powers. If someone flouts the law, they should face due process. This harassment is unnecessary; it is not right, and it must stop,” he cautioned.
He suggested that Mahama’s fascination with the military—reflected in his memoir My First Coup d’État and his habit of wearing military uniforms while in office—may influence some of his instincts as president.
“Perhaps it was always a dream to be a soldier or a military leader,” Agyepong remarked.
Describing Mahama as a “good friend,” he stressed that leaders must not allow those around them to push them into decisions that weaken their legacy.
“We need strong leaders who surround themselves with people bold enough to speak the truth,” he said.
Agyepong noted that his comments are motivated by principle, not hostility, recalling how he publicly advised then-President Akufo-Addo in 2022 and faced criticism from his own party.
“I spoke from a sincere heart. I have known him long before politics—when his father passed away, I accompanied my dad to pay respects, and I often visited him at his Kojo Thompson Road office. That history is why I value honesty in leadership, and why I will always speak truth to power,” he explained.
