The Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, Gilbert Adjie, has announced that government will reset the country’s legal and policy framework to strengthen water governance.
Speaking at the maiden launch of World Rivers Day in Accra, Mr. Adjie revealed that a Legislative Instrument on buffer zones will soon be enacted to legally protect river corridors, prevent encroachment, and safeguard water resources for future generations.
He emphasized that enforcement of the new regulations will be strict, warning that offenders who pollute or destroy water bodies through activities such as illegal mining will face severe penalties.
According to him, government will also intensify the fight against galamsey while providing alternative livelihoods for young people engaged in the practice.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Hydrological Department, Dr. Sylvester Darko, disclosed plans to collaborate with stakeholders and partners to provide accurate and reliable hydrological information.
The initiative, he explained, will support improved water resource management, planning, early warning systems for floods, and scientific research into innovative water technologies.
