Four people, including three women and a teenage girl, have been confirmed dead at a shelter camp in Wenchi, Bono Region, following the recent Gbenyir conflict.

JoyNews sources at the camp reported that two of the deceased initially fell ill and were rushed to the Wenchi Hospital, where they later died while receiving treatment.

The teenage girl reportedly died in the camp.

The fourth victim, a woman believed to be in her early 90s, was returned to her home community of Gbongbon in the Bole District, where she died two days after her arrival.

The deceased, including this 90-year-old woman.

While the exact causes of death have not been medically confirmed, sources in the camp suggest the fatalities may be linked to harsh weather conditions and poor health care.

“Many of the victims here are children and women. Some cannot cope with the challenges in this new environment. Others sustained injuries while fleeing the conflict, and some had pre-existing health conditions that have worsened since they arrived,” one source explained.

JoyNews has so far been unable to reach camp authorities for an official response regarding the deaths.

Aside from the Wenchi camp, there are additional shelters in Sawla, Vonkore in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba area, Techiman, Sobiriso (numbers one and two), and Sefi, as well as camps across the border in Ivory Coast, accommodating displaced persons affected by the conflict.

This brings to 36 the number of deaths related to the conflict.
