Why NPP’s Abronye is seeking asylum abroad

Kwame Baffoe

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC, has formally petitioned several foreign embassies and international organizations for political asylum and protection.

The outspoken politician claims he is facing persecution, intimidation, and threats to his life under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

In a letter dated September 5, 2025, Abronye copied the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in Ghana, the UNHCR, the UNDP, as well as the embassies of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Côte d’Ivoire.

According to him, his situation meets the threshold for asylum under international human rights instruments.

Abronye alleged that the campaign of harassment against him has intensified since the NDC administration assumed office in January 2025.

He recalled being arrested in February by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and detained for over 13 hours after criticizing government’s dismissal of more than 150,000 public sector workers. During that detention, he said he was threatened and warned to stop speaking against state policies.

Since then, Abronye claims he has faced continuous threats, including anonymous phone calls and electronic messages allegedly traced to individuals close to the ruling party.

He cited one incident after he publicly questioned the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, about rising insecurity in northern Ghana. According to him, he later received a call from someone who identified himself as “Mr. Seth,” claiming to act on behalf of the IGP, warning that if he failed to report to Police Headquarters, he would be “dealt with mercilessly” at the cost of his life.

The NPP chairman accused the government of fostering a culture of fear by detaining opposition politicians beyond the 48-hour constitutional limit, a move he believes is meant to silence dissent.

He said these threats have placed him and his family in grave danger, leaving him with no choice but to seek protection abroad.

In support of his asylum request, Abronye cited international legal frameworks such as the 1951 Refugee Convention, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the 1969 OAU Refugee Convention, and UNHCR guidelines on the protection of opposition figures facing political persecution.

“I respectfully seek political asylum and security protection in your country. I place my trust in your respected institution to consider my case urgently and extend the necessary humanitarian assistance and protection under international conventions governing the rights of asylum seekers,” he wrote.

He expressed hope that the embassies and organizations addressed would urgently consider his request.
