Cape Coast came alive once again with colour, rhythm, and tradition as the people of Oguaa celebrated the annual Fetu Afahye Festival, a hallmark of the region’s cultural identity and unity.
The grand procession through the historic streets, followed by the durbar of chiefs and people, stood out as the highlight of this year’s celebrations, drawing locals, dignitaries, and visitors from across Ghana and beyond.
The Oguaa Traditional Area proudly showcased its heritage in a dazzling display of kente, smocks, beads, and regal headgear.
The atmosphere was charged with the sound of energetic drumming, pulsating rhythms, and graceful dancing, while performers and masqueraders infused artistry and spirituality into the festival’s vibrant spirit.
Beyond its splendour, the celebration reaffirmed a deep sense of communal pride and identity.
A particularly significant moment was the presence of Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri, and Olori Atuwatse III, whose attendance underscored the strong cultural and historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria. Their participation lent the event international prestige, symbolizing shared traditions and reinforcing the importance of cultural diplomacy across West Africa.
This year’s festival was held under the theme “Innovate to Elevate,” a message that resonated strongly throughout the durbar grounds.
In his keynote address, the Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, urged the people of Cape Coast and Ghanaians at large to harness innovation and embrace technology, creativity, and entrepreneurship. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to create sustainable opportunities that would uplift communities and serve as a model for development across the nation.
His remarks highlighted the importance of blending cultural heritage with modern progress to build a resilient and prosperous society.
The durbar was graced by several distinguished personalities. Representing the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Policy Adviser for Political Affairs at the Office of the Vice President, who delivered a goodwill message on her behalf.
Other dignitaries in attendance included the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere; Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Hon. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan; Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North, Hon. Kwamena Minta Nyarku; the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Mr. Anthony Sarpong, as well as traditional leaders and invited guests.
