The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Ghana Chapter, led by its Global Chair, Christa Dodoo, and Chapter President, Sampson Opare-Agyemang, has paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, to explore avenues for collaboration in safeguarding and sustainably managing national properties.
During the meeting, Ms. Dodoo highlighted IFMA’s global track record in strengthening facility management systems, citing successful examples from Nigeria and Singapore, where institutions have been established to regulate and standardize practices.
She noted that Ghana’s Public Works Department (PWD), if adequately empowered, could play a similar role in ensuring efficient management of public facilities.
Madam Tetteh-Agbotui, while expressing her appreciation for the profession, underscored the crucial role facility management plays in national development.
Drawing from her experience in the construction of Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 3, she emphasized the contribution of facility management to the project’s success.
“You cannot downplay the role of facility management,” she said. “IFMA Ghana must intensify its advocacy to create more awareness of the profession’s importance.”
She further assured the Association of her support and encouraged IFMA Ghana to engage stakeholders to promote facility management as an essential component of sustainable infrastructure development.
As part of the engagement, IFMA Ghana presented proposals for a stronger partnership with government, including:
-
Integrating facility management policies into infrastructure planning and budgeting.
-
Establishing a national facility management framework with clear standards for managing public assets.
-
Mandating facility management roles in all public infrastructure projects to ensure professional oversight from design to operations.
-
Expanding facility management education and certification for government staff.
-
Setting up a joint task force with government to provide technical guidance and ensure long-term collaboration.
According to IFMA Ghana, these measures would help protect national investments, generate long-term cost savings, improve service delivery, and extend the lifespan of public facilities for future generations.
This engagement forms part of IFMA Ghana’s broader agenda to support government in safeguarding national infrastructure and advancing sustainable development.
