GRNMA challenges committee’s report on Ridge Hospital assault

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Jefferson Asare, has rejected aspects of the ministerial committee’s report on the assault at Ridge Hospital, insisting that the victim was officially diagnosed with polycontusion.

The committee, established by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, released its findings on Wednesday, August 27.

It concluded that there was no medical evidence to confirm claims that Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a rotation nurse at Ridge, suffered a shoulder dislocation during the August 18 incident.

Presenting the report, committee chair Dr. Lawrence Ofori-Boadu stated that medical records did not indicate any fracture or shoulder dislocation, though the nurse had been given pain relief medication, advised to rest, and placed under psychological support.

However, speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Asare stressed that the official diagnosis was polycontusion—a condition involving multiple bruises with visible redness, swelling, and pain at the site of injury.

“The lady’s diagnosis at the time was polycontusion. What does that mean? It means there is swelling, there is pain, and there is redness at the point of impact. That was the doctor’s assessment,” he explained.

He went on to question whether the committee’s position indirectly undermined the competence of the doctor who conducted the initial examination.

“Are they trying to suggest that the doctor who diagnosed her did not know what he or she was doing? Is that the implication of their report?” he asked.

Mr. Asare maintained that the committee’s conclusions should not downplay the reality of the assault or call into question the credibility of the medical professionals who treated the victim.
