The Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Chiwitey Dari Andrew, has revealed the current situation in Gbenyiri, a farming community in the district, following renewed violent clashes.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the MP said the district is “a bit stable” now, although the violence has affected almost the entire southern part of the district.

“At the moment, the situation is a bit stable, but the whole southern part of the district has been affected. Unfortunately, it is gradually taking a tribal dimension, throwing the entire community into chaos,” he explained.

The clashes, believed to have stemmed from a long-standing land dispute, have claimed at least ten lives and left twelve others injured. Despite the deployment of security personnel, the violence has persisted.

On Sunday, August 24, five people were confirmed dead, with six others seriously injured in an exchange of gunfire.

Mr. Chiwitey disclosed that the attackers are allegedly linked to Gonja warriors who move from one community to another.

“These are people who are considered warriors of the Gonjas. They just go into communities, shoot, and kill,” he alleged.

He added that he has been in constant communication with the Regional Police Commander, even though he has not personally visited the community yet.

“The police have assured me that security has been beefed up. So, for now, there is much security presence in the area,” he assured.
