Former Ghana captain John Mensah has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The senior national team is set to regroup next month for Matchday 7 and 8 of the qualifiers, beginning with a clash against Chad at the Stade Olympique Maréchal Idriss Déby Itno on September 4, followed by a home fixture against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8.
Mensah, who represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, believes the team’s strong performances in the last international window signal a bright path ahead.
“If they play like they did in the last two games, I believe they can qualify. They are playing well now, and they know each other very well. I believe if they keep that up, they can qualify,” Mensah told Citi Sports.
The former Sunderland defender also emphasized the importance of maintaining the squad to sustain success and potentially end Ghana’s trophy drought.
“This is a team they are maintaining to stay in the national team. I believe if they keep them together and make a few changes, they can continue to work together and achieve a trophy for the nation,” Mensah, who played 86 times for Ghana and scored three goals, added.
Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points after six matches, positioning themselves strongly in the race for World Cup qualification.
