Birifor Youth Association demands urgent intervention in Savannah Region clashes

The Birifor Youth Association (BYA) has sounded the alarm over renewed communal violence in Gbenteng (Gbeniyiri) and parts of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Savannah Region, which has reportedly left at least five people dead and several others injured.

According to the association, the clashes, allegedly triggered by a land dispute, have escalated into armed attacks, burning of homes, and indiscriminate killings, forcing families—especially women and children—into fear and displacement.

In a statement signed by its president, Mrs. Neormah Nyoon Brew, BYA accused the police of unprofessional handling of the conflict and called for urgent government intervention to restore calm. The group appealed for an immediate cessation of hostilities, a stronger and impartial security presence, and humanitarian support for affected communities.

BYA also urged traditional leaders, including the Yagbonwura and the Bolewura, to exercise their authority in mediating the conflict and restoring peace. The association further demanded an independent investigation into the root causes of the clashes and the conduct of security agencies.

The group concluded by appealing to all Birifors, both home and abroad, to remain calm, stressing that “there is no substitute for peace.”
