Asunafo North Assembly to allocate funds for neglected tropical diseases in 2026 plan

The Asunafo North Municipal Assembly in the Ahafo Region has announced plans to allocate funds in its 2026 medium-term development plan to strengthen efforts against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).

The commitment was revealed during a Bi-Annual Accountability Monitoring Forum held in Goaso. NTDs such as yaws, leprosy, elephantiasis, and Buruli ulcer continue to affect residents in the municipality, with health experts warning that these conditions have not received the attention they deserve.

Executive Director of Tim Africa Aid Ghana (TAAG), Isaac Kwabena Kakpeibe, welcomed the decision, describing it as timely support for NGOs already operating on the ground. He noted that TAAG has been leading initiatives to combat NTDs but faces funding limitations.

Ghana Health Service (GHS) Municipal Director, Theresah Krah, who chaired the forum, also commended TAAG’s impact in local communities. She highlighted that the NGO has trained volunteers to detect cases early for referral to health facilities.

Additionally, persons affected by NTDs have received skills training in areas such as soap-making to help them earn a living and reduce financial dependence.

Health officials say the planned funding marks a crucial step toward reducing the burden of NTDs in Asunafo North while strengthening community-based interventions.
