The newly inaugurated board of the Legal Service has been tasked to make improved remuneration for legal staff at the Attorney General’s Department a top priority.
At the swearing-in ceremony, Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, highlighted the pressing issue of low salaries within the ministry, stressing that inadequate pay undermines efficiency and discourages commitment among staff.
“We need to raise the bar when it comes to salaries and conditions of service. I have been making, and will continue to make, a strong case to government and to the President so that we can secure a proper review of the remuneration of lawyers working at the Attorney General’s Department,” he said.
According to Dr. Ayine, poor incentives in the justice sector have led to high staff turnover, with many young lawyers viewing the ministry as a stepping stone.
“The justice sector, in general, struggles with poor pay. This is something I intend to work on with you to resolve once and for all, so that we can both attract and retain the best talent. Some lawyers leave because they consider the ministry a training ground—since it offers exposure to every aspect of the law,” he explained.
The Attorney General, who also chairs the Legal Service Board, charged members to strengthen the institution through strategic leadership and capacity building.
“The board is expected to provide direction, oversight, and leadership needed to fortify the Legal Service and enhance the skills of its officers. With your collective expertise, I am confident you can elevate the service to the highest levels of professionalism and integrity,” he noted.
Members of the Legal Service Board are: Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, MP – Attorney General and Chairman; Justice Srem Sai, Ph.D. – Deputy Attorney General; Helen Akpene Awo Ziwu – Solicitor General; and Justice Avril Lovelace Johnson – Supreme Court Judge nominated by the Chief Justice.
The rest are Michael Nana Yaw Aduhene Adu Darko – Chairman of the Public Services Commission; Kweku Gyau Baffour – Representative of the Ghana Bar Association; and Michael Damoah and Rosaline Awovi Kudzoadzi – Presidential Appointees.
