2026 World Cup: Otto Addo aims at going beyond group phase

-

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says his primary goal for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is to guide Ghana beyond the group stage, a feat he believes the team is capable of achieving with the right mindset and tactical discipline.

Ghana sealed qualification for next summer’s tournament after topping their qualifying group with 25 points, capping off their campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Addo, who led the team during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana exited in the group stage, says lessons from that experience will be crucial heading into the expanded global showpiece.

“I want to overcome the group stage, but then, from there, it’s difficult to predict,” the 49-year-old told 3Sports.

“It’s very, very important that we believe in ourselves, we keep the flexibility which we already have, and the players understand what we want to do.

“This style of play for the long term will give us a lot of chances to go far in that World Cup,” he added.

Ghana’s best performance at the World Cup came in 2010 when the Black Stars reached the quarterfinals in South Africa, narrowly missing out on a historic semifinal berth.

With qualification secured, Ghana will learn their group-stage opponents when the official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, takes place on December 5.
