The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed ongoing talks with Austria over a possible international friendly as the Black Stars step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that Ghana’s management is in discussions with several countries, with Austria emerging as one of the leading options to face the Black Stars following their scheduled friendly against Germany.
Ghana, who are preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, will first take on Germany in an international friendly on March 30 in Stuttgart. Asante Twum said the GFA is working to finalise additional fixtures and will make them public once agreements are signed.
“Austria is one of the teams we are talking to to play after the Germany friendly game, and hopefully, when the contract is signed, we will make it official to the public,” he told Accra-based Sporty FM.
The Black Stars, drawn in Group L, will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, before facing England in Boston and concluding the group stage against Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
After early exits at the 2014 Brazil and 2022 Qatar World Cups, Ghana will be aiming for a stronger showing at the expanded 2026 tournament.
