2025 WASSCE: Students allegedly assault housemistress for preventing cheating

The ongoing 2025 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), expected to run smoothly, turned chaotic at Wesley Senior High School (SHS) in Konongo, Ashanti Region.

Some students reportedly pelted stones at the residence of the senior housemistress in a violent outburst after she allegedly prevented them from cheating.

Reports by Accra-based Citi News suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the housemistress and a candidate during the Christian Religious Studies (CRS) paper on Friday, September 5.

According to school authorities, the student was stopped for allegedly attempting to cheat, after which he verbally abused the housemistress. He was, however, later made to apologise and taken through counselling.

But on the night of Sunday, September 7, a group of students allegedly launched an attack on the housemistress’s residence, hurling stones and causing panic on campus.

Police were called in to restore calm, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Headmistress Rev. Agnes Gaisie stressed that the situation is under control and assured parents and stakeholders that the ongoing examinations are continuing without disruption.

The development comes as the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 16 people nationwide for examination malpractice in the ongoing exercise.
