Nigeria secured third place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the bronze medal match at Stade Mohammed V.

After a goalless draw in regulation time, the Super Eagles triumphed 4-2 from the spot, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who denied efforts from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.

Egypt struggled to convert possession into meaningful chances, registering five shots with only one on target despite holding 53% of the ball.

Nigeria, while less dominant statistically, looked more dangerous in key moments and made their opportunities count.

The penalty shootout swung in Nigeria’s favor after Egypt missed their first two kicks. Nigeria calmly converted four of five penalties, with Ademola Lookman slotting home the decisive effort.

Earlier in the match, Paul Onuachu had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 36th minute.

Despite the setback, Egypt demonstrated strong defensive organization throughout the tournament.

On the day, however, Nigeria’s composure and clinical execution proved decisive, securing the bronze medal.

Attention now turns to the AFCON final, set for Sunday, January 18, at Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where Senegal and Morocco will clash at 19:00 GMT.
