The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has condemned the disorderly scenes that unfolded during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Morocco on Sunday.
The match in Rabat descended into chaos after a late penalty was awarded to hosts Morocco following a foul on Brahim Díaz inside the 18-yard box.
Supporters clashed with security personnel as tensions escalated, and Senegal briefly walked off the pitch before returning to continue the game.
The post-match atmosphere was further inflamed by unsporting behaviour on the field. Morocco captain Ashraf Hakimi threw away Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towel, while teammate Ishmael Saibari attempted to seize the towel from substitute goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, who was standing behind the goal to prevent a repeat of the incident.
In a statement released on Monday, CAF described the actions of some players and officials as “unacceptable” and called for an end to any misconduct directed at referees or match organisers.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” the statement said.
The governing body added that it is currently reviewing all available footage from the high-profile final and will forward the case to the relevant disciplinary bodies for appropriate sanctions against those found responsible.
“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty,” it added.
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has since apologised for the decision to withdraw his team from the pitch, a move that was later reversed.
Senegal ultimately claimed the title, thanks to an extra-time strike from Pape Gueye, securing their second AFCON crown.
